Virtual Services
**Please note that as of April 1, 2023 I will be conducting in-person counselling only to residents of Muskoka. I will continue to offer virtual services to individuals living in Parry Sound. I will no longer be offering virtual couples therapy regardless of place of residence**
Virtual services have become increasingly popular due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are pros and cons to this type of service that you may want to consider to see if it is right for you.
Virtual Services
How does it work?
The use of technology to deliver healthcare and mental health services has become increasingly prevalent as an alternative or addition to in-person services. Enjoy my services from the comfort of your own home!
Steps we take.
I use a software called Owl Practice. Owl, uses bank-level encryption (SSL) to encrypt all data that moves between their secure and dedicated servers and the device and browser on which the clinician accesses their Owl Practice account. Owl is secure and PHIPA compliant.
Pros:
- The use of technology to deliver healthcare and mental health services has opened the door to delivering services province wide
- Participate in counselling from the comfort of your home
- Convenient and eliminates travel time
- Helps when there are barriers to transportation
- Eliminates personal contact / reduce the spread of illness
- Promotes confidentiality / no overlap in the waiting room
Cons:
- Requires internet which can be a barrier for some Muskoka residents
- Technology glitches: often there are delays due to poor internet connections which can be frustrating for some clients. This can cause a frozen screen, delayed or echoing microphones, service being temporarily interrupted etc.
- Eliminates personal contact / your therapist may not be able to pick up on significant, non-verbal cues during the session
- Confidentiality cannot be guaranteed / requires the therapist and client to ensure they are alone in a safe and confidential space (best practices can be put in place to assist with this issue).
